Nació el 12 de agosto de 1881 en Ashfield, Massachusetts.

Hijo de Henry Churchill DeMille, episcopaliano y de Matilda Beatrice Samuel, judía de ascendencia alemana.

Comenzó como actor infantil y más tarde autor dramático.

Su fama como realizador nace de las comedias matrimoniales, protagonizadas por Gloria Swanson, que realiza entre 1917 y 1920 y de las producciones históricas con "Los diez mandamientos" (1923) y "Rey de reyes" (1926), para seguir en el sonoro con "El signo de la cruz" (1932), "Cleopatra" (1934) y "Las cruzadas" (1935).

Continúa con el cine de gran espectáculo en "Buffalo Bill" (1937), "Unión Pacífico" (1939), "Los inconquistables" (1947), "Corsarios del caribe" (1938), "Piratas del Canadá" (1940) y "Por el valle de las sombras" (1944).

Realizó también las superproducciones bíblicas: "Sansón y Dalila" (1949) y "Los diez mandamientos" (1956). Su filmografía se cierra con "El mayor espectáculo del mundo" (1952).

Casado con Constance Adams de 1902 a 1959. Fue padre de Cecilia y Katherine DeMille. Su hija Katherine contrajo matrimonio con el actor Anthony Quinn en contra de sus deseos.


Cecil B. DeMille falleció en Hollywood, Los Ángeles, California, el 21 de enero de 1959.
