Nació el 1 de septiembre de 1922 en Vancouver, B.C. Canadá.

De Carlo creció en la pobreza y tuvo que abandonar la escuela secundaria para trabajar. Sin embargo ganó un concurso de belleza, oportunidad que aprovechó a partir de la década de los 40 para participar en pequeños papeles en el cine.

Bailarina desde niña, trabajó en el music-hall al que dejó por el cine en el año 1942.

Fue una de las grandes estrellas del cine de los años 40 y 50, logró su fama realizando papeles exóticos de mujeres con el cabello negro, pero lo que nadie imagina es que en realidad era una de las pocas rubias naturales en Hollywood.

Su primer papel como protagonista en Salomé la embrujadora (Salome Where She Danced, Ch. Lamont, 1945), fue el comienzo para interpretar a personajes como Calamity Jane.

Mujer dotada de una sensualidad natural que la ayudó a trabajar en películas como (El abrazo de la muerte, R. Siodmak, 1949), (Los diez mandamientos, Cecil B. De Mille, 1956) y (Passion , A. Dwan 1954; Flame of the Island , E. Ludwig, 1955; Timbuktú, J. Tourneur, 1959).

Fue Raoul Walsh quien le dio la oportunidad de interpretar los papeles dramáticos más interesantes (Los gavilanes del estrecho, 1953 y La esclava libre, 1957, junto a Clark Gable).


Desde 1960, se dedicó a la televisión (serie paródica La familia Munsters [The Munsters]) como "Lily".

Casada con Bob Morgan de 1955 a 1974, fue madre de Bruce Morgan y Michael Morgan.

Yvonne De Carlo falleció en Woodland Hills, Los Ángeles, el 8 de enero de 2007.
