Engelbert Humperdinck nació el 2 de mayo de 1936, en Madrás (India) donde su padre servía en el ejército británico.

Fue uno de los diez hijos de Mervyn Dorsey, militar de origen galés, y de su esposa Olive Dorsey, de ascendencia alemana.Se trasladó a Leicester, Inglaterra, siendo un niño.
Cantante
En los comienzos de su carrera se lo conoció como Gerry Dorsey. Inicialmente tocaba el saxofón en clubes nocturnos, aunque pronto comenzó a cantar y estrenó su primer single, I'll Never Fall in Love Again, en 1958. El cantante y compositor Gordon Mills fue quien lo encaminó en su carrera.En los años cincuenta alcanzó un gran éxito en Inglaterra, y debutó en la televisión del país.
Tras recuperarse de una tuberculosis sufrida a mediados de la década de 1960, es de nuevo relanzado al mercado, pero esta vez con el nombre artístico de "Engelbert Humperdinck", como el músico alemán compositor de ópera Hänsel y Gretel (1893) y que también fue asistente de Richard Wagner.

Tras firmar con Decca Records, lanzó una serie de singles que tuvieron éxito comercial. El primer corte del álbum debut no alcanza el éxito esperado, pero fue con el segundo corte Release me, cuando conoció la fama. Llegó a vender un millón de copias en Inglaterra.Con la llegada de los años 70, su popularidad decayó, pero prosiguió con su carrera en circuitos como Las Vegas. Desde entonces, continuó produciendo música, en mayor o menor éxito de crítica y público.
Estuvo algún tiempo sin grabar, pero en 1987 edita el álbum Recuerda que te amo, en el que incluía un dúo con Gloria Gaynor. En 1990 había obtenido 58 discos de oro, 18 de platino y varios premios Grammy.
