Carol Lombard nació el 6 de octubre de 1909 en Fort Wayne.
Cuando tenía trece años Alan Dwan le dio un papel importante en A Perfect Crime (1921).
Intentó conseguir el papel principal de La quimera de oro de Chaplin pero no lo consiguió.
Triunfa en Cuidado con las mujeres (Safety in Numbers, Schertzinger, 1930). Continuó con Casada por azar (Wesley Ruggles, 1932) en la que su compañero fue su futuro marido Clark Gable y en El águila y el halcón (The Eagle and the Hawk, Stuart Walker, Mitchell Leisen, CO Stuart Walker, 1933). Howard Hawks la contrata para ser Lily Garland en La comedia de la vida (1934).
Aparece en Candidata a millonaria (Leisen, 1935), Al servicio de las damas (My Man Godfrey, G. La Cava, 1936 con William Powell que había sido su marido), True Confession (W. Ruggles, 1937), La reina de Nueva York (W. A. Wellman, id.), Matrimonio original (Alfred Hitchcock, 1941 ) Ser o no ser (Ernest Lubitsch 1942). Simultáneamente, abordó también papeles ligeramente dramáticos que interpretó con perfecto dominio. En Comenzó en el Trópico (Swing High, Swing Low, Leisen, 1937), se reveló como gran actriz de melodrama, El lazo sagrado (1939) y Dos mujeres y un amor (id.), bajo la dirección de John Cromwell.
En 16 de enero de 1942 Carole Lombard falleció en un accidente de avión cerca de Las Vegas.
