Hijo de Clare Galloway y John James Bannen, abogado.

Actor de reparto, aunque protagonizó algunas películas.

Dadas sus características físicas interpreta por lo general a personajes duros. Encarnó al abuelo de Esperanza y gloria.

Interpretó a Christopher Lowe en From Beyond the Grave (1974); a Jim Prideaux en Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (1979) y a Jackie O'Shea en Waking Ned Devine (1998).

Estuvo nominado al Oscar como Mejor Actor Secundario en 1965 por El vuelo del Fénix.

Ian Bannen murió el 3 de noviembre de 1999 en Loch Ness, Escocia, en un accidente de circulación.
