Waterloo, Iowa, Estados Unidos.
Trabajó como secretaria a tiempo parcial, en 1946, a la edad de 19 años, fue coronada "Miss Little Rock", después se trasladó a Hollywood, California, para perseguir su carrera como actriz.
Apasionada del circo, terminó finalmente en el cine en películas de serie B, apareciendo en el reparto como Betty Adams, nombre que posteriormente cambiaría por el de Julia Adams y finalmente por Julie Adams. Su primer papel en el cine fue una breve aparición en
Red, Hot and Blue (1949), seguido por un papel más importante en
Marshal of Heldorado (1950). Después apareció como Kay Lawrence en
Creature from the Black Lagoon, estrenada en 1954.
Fichada por la Universal, fue una de las musas del cine fantástico de los años cincuenta con su aparición en
La mujer y el monstruo. En televisión apareció como la esposa de
James Stewart en el
James Stewart Show, de 1971 a 1972, en
Código rojo y en
Se ha escrito un crimen.
En 1999, recibió el premio Golden Boot por su trabajo en los westerns. Fue incluida en el Arkansas Entertainers Hall of Fame en 2000.
En 2011, publicó un libro sobre su vida y su carrera,
The Lucky Southern Star: Reflexiones desde The Black Lagoon.
Estuvo casada con el guionista Leonard B. Stern, de 1951 a 1953. Después contrajo matrimonio con el actor y director Ray Danton a partir de 1954 y hasta el año 1981. Con él tuvo dos hijos: Steven Danton, ayudante de dirección, y Mitchell Danton, editor.
Julie Adams falleció el 3 de febrero de 2019, en Los Ángeles, California, Estados Unidos.
