Actriz estadounidense
Nació el 3 de mayo de 1906 en Illinois en el seno de una familia de inmigrantes alemanes.
Siendo joven participó en distintos concursos de belleza.
Debutó en "The Beggar Maid" (1921) y se convirtió en una estrella con "Beau Brummell" (1923), dirigida por Harry Beaumont y co-protagonizado por John Barrymore. Posteriormente protagoniza "Don Juan" (1925), de Alan Crosland, otra vez con John Barrymore (su pareja sentimental).
Con la llegada del cine sonoro sigue triunfando y trabaja en "
Tierra de pasión" (1932) de
Victor Fleming, "
Desengaño" (1936) de
William Wyler, "
Huracán sobre la isla" (1937), de
John Ford; "
El prisionero de Zenda" (1937), versión dirigida por
John Cromwell y "
Medianoche" (1939), de
Mitchell Leisen.
En 1936 protagoniza un escándalo cuando se da a conocer su diario por su marido con motivo del
divorcio y en el que Mary describía su relación con el dramaturgo
George S. Kaufman. Ganó su único
Oscar como actriz secundaria por "
La gran mentira" (1941) película de
Edmund Goulding, después aparece en "
El halcón maltés" (1941), de
John Huston y protagonizado por
Humphrey Bogart, "
Cita en San Luis" (1944) de
Vincente Minnelli, "
Act of violence" (1949) de
Fred Zinneman y "
Mujercitas" (1949) de
Mervyn Leroy.
Contrajo matrimonio en 1928 con
Kenneth Hawks del que enviudó en 1930; después con
Frankin Thorpe (1931) con
Manuel del Campo (1936) y con
Thomas Wheelock (1945).
Mary Astor falleció en
Woodland Hills, Los Ángeles, California, el 25 de septiembre de 1987.
