Nació el 28 de octubre de 1902 en Lewisham.

Contrajo matrimonio con Charles Laughton en 1929.

Hizo su debut en la gran pantalla en 1933. Su físico no le ayudó a conseguir grandes papeles.

Realizó inolvidables interpretaciones como la artista de El reloj asesino (J. Farrow, 1948) o la bruja de Me enamoré de una bruja (R. Quine, 1958).

Trabajó junto a su marido, Charles Laughton, la primera vez en La vida privada de Enrique VIII (Alexander Korda, 1933).

También en Bandera amarilla (E. Pommer, 1938), y Testigo de cargo (Billy Wilder, 1958), donde su brío interpretativo tenía algunos ramalazos psicodramáticos.

Su creación más inolvidable fue encarnando a La novia de Frankenstein (J. Whale, 1935).


Elsa Lanchester falleció en Woodland Hills, California, el 26 de diciembre de 1986.
