Robert Browning
Escritor inglés
Nació el 7 de mayo de 1812 en Camberwell, Londres.
Hijo de un funcionario del Banco de Inglaterra. Asistió al colegio hasta los 14 años.
En 1833 se publicó su primer libro de poesía, Pauline. Su siguiente obra fue Paracelso (1835), un poema dramático que le dio fama. Escribió después varias obras teatrales que no tuvieron éxito.
Entre 1841 y 1846, publicó una serie de poemas,
Campanas y granadas, en el que se incluyen, entre otros, '
Pipa pasa', '
Mi última duquesa' y '
El obispo prepara su tumba'.
Sus
Poemas lírico-dramáticos (1842) y sus
Historias dramáticas (1845) fueron recogidas después, con otras nuevas composiciones en
Campanas y granadas (1847).
En 1846 contrajo matrimonio con la poetisa
Elizabeth Barrett.
Por los problemas que ocasionaba el clima en la salud de su mujer se trasladaron a
Florencia, en el palacio que luego haría famoso el poema de Elizabeth
Las ventanas de la Casa Guidi.
Allí escribió
La Nochebuena y la Pascua (1850) y una serie de monólogos dramáticos publicados bajo el título de
Hombres y mujeres (1855), en la que se incluyen '
Fra Lippo Lippi' y '
Andrea del Sarto', estudios de artistas del
Renacimiento.
En 1861 falleció su mujer y regresó a Londres, donde escribió
Dramatis Personae (1864), y la que se considera su obra maestra,
El anillo y el libro (4 volúmenes, 1868-1869).
En 1878 Browning volvió a Italia, donde su único hijo se estableció definitivamente. En este periodo escribió el texto narrativo
Idilios dramáticos (1879 y 1880) y
Asolando.
Robert Browning falleció en
Venecia, Italia, el 12 de diciembre de 1889.
