Lyman Frank Baum

Escritor estadounidense



Nació el 15 de mayo de 1856 en Chittenango, Nueva York.

Trabajó en el negocio de aceite de su familia y posteriormente como granjero, artista, corredor de petróleo, redactor y periodista.

En Dakota del Sur inició la escritura del que sería su primer libro: Father Goose, publicado en el año 1899 después de que se radicara en Chicago para trabajar en un departamento comercial.

Su verdadero triunfo fue con El Mago de Oz "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" (1900) para el que realizó también la adaptación musical en el año 1901. Se dice que el título fue tomado de un fichero que había en su despacho con las letras O-Z señalando el comienzo y final de un archivo.

Sobre él, se realizaron varias películas, entre las cuales destaca la de Victor Fleming en 1939.

Después de viajar por Europa, se instala en Pasadena, California (1902), donde escribe 13 libros más en la línea del Mago de Oz y otras historias para niños. Usó diversos seudónimos como Schuyler Staunton, Laura Bancroft, capitán Hugh Fitzgerald, Suzanne Metcalfe, Floyd Akens, y Edith Van Dyne.

Frank Baum falleció en Hollywood el 6 de mayo de 1910.
