Irving Pichel

Director estadounidense




Irving Pichel nació el 24 de junio de 1891 en Pittsburgh (Estados Unidos).

Sus inicios fueron como actor de teatro, más tarde fue empleado en el departamento de guiones de la MGM (1927) y actor de cine que interpretó a Stalin en El agente británico (Michael Curtiz, 1934).

También actuó, ese mismo año, en la película Cleopatra, de Cecil B. De Mille, en el papel de Apolodoro.

Se inició en la realización junto a Ernest Schoedsack con El malvado Zaroff (The Most Dangerous Game, 1932).

Más adelante, firmó en solitario algunas obras de bajo presupuesto, principalmente melodramas, para la Republic y otras compañías, como: Mañana es vivir (Tomorrow Is Forever, 1946, con Orson Welles y Claudette Colbert); El milagro de las campanas (Miracle of the Bells, 1948), O.S.S. (1946) y Con destino a la luna (Destination Moon, 1950).

Fue un realizador de prestigio que sufrió algunos problemas debido al macarthismo. Una de sus últimas películas fue una biografía: Martin Luther (1953).

Irving Pichel falleció en Los Ángeles el 13 de julio de 1954.
