William Powell
William Horatio Powell

Actor estadounidense



Nació el 29 de julio de 1892 en Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Con diecinueve años debuta en Broadway. En el año 1922 hace su debut en el mundo del cine en la película "Sherlock Holmes" dirigido por Albert Parker.

Durante los años 20 aparece en películas como "Romola" (1924) de Henry King, "Beau Geste" (1926) de Herbert Brenon, "Aloma del mar del sur" (1926) de Maurice Tourneur, "La última orden" (1928) "La redada" (1928), dirigidas por Josef Von Sternberg y "Reclutas detectives" (1928) de Frank Strayer.

Su primera cinta sonora fue "Intromisión" (1929) de Lothar Mendes y Roy Pomeroy). Después trabaja en películas como "¿Quién la mató?" (1929) de Malcom St. Clair o "Matando en la sobra" (1933) realizada por Michael Curtiz.

Tras el divorcio de su primera esposa en en 1931 se casa con la actriz Carole Lombard, con quien trabajó en "El gigoló" (1931) de Lothar Mendes, "Un hombre de mundo" (1931) dirigida por Richard Wallace y "Al servicio de las damas" (1936) de Gregory La Cava. Se separaron en 1933.

Protagoniza junto a Myrna Loy la serie de "The Thin Man", que comienza con "La cena de los acusados" (1934). Por esos años fue nominado en dos ocasiones al Oscar, la primera por "La cena de los acusados" y la segunda por "Al servicio de las damas" . Después intervino en películas como "Te quiero otra vez" (1940) de Van Dyke, "Mi marido está loco" (1941) de Jack Conway y "Vivir con papá" (1947) de Michael Curtiz. Por su actuación en esta última volvería a ser nominado al Oscar.

En 1940, contrajo matrimonio con la actriz Diana Lewis. Tras "Como casarse con un millonario" (1953) de Jean Negulesco y  "Escala en Hawai" (1955), se retira del cine.


William Powell falleció el 5 de marzo de 1984 en Palm Springs, California.
