Michael York hizo su aparición en la gran pantalla dirigido por Franco Zeffirelli en dos papeles shakespearianos: Lucentio (La fierecilla domada, 1967) y Tebaldo (Romeo y Julieta, id.). Tras su destacada interpretación del estudiante en Accidente (Joseph Losey, 1967), comenzó una brillante carrera internacional.Actor prolífico y, en su mayor parte, comercial, algunas de sus actuaciones más destacadas son: Cabaret, dirigida por Bob Fosse en 1972; Los tres mosqueteros, de Richard Lester (1974); The Island of Dr. Moreau, de Don Taylor (1976), y El éxito es la mejor venganza, dirigida por J. Skolimowski en 1984.
En el año 1997 encarnó a Johnny Mentero, el jefe de Austin Powers, en Austin Powers.

En 2000 fue nominado a los premios Emmy por su interpretación en una película para televisión.Miembro de la Orden del Imperio Británico con el grado de oficial.
Matrimonio e hijos
El 27 de marzo de 1968 se casó con Patricia McCallum. Su hijastro es el productor de *Star Wars* Rick McCallum.En 2013 anunció que padecía la enfermedad de amiloidosis. En 2012 se sometió a un trasplante de células madre.
Junto a su esposa se mudó a Rochester, Minnesota, en 2022 para estar más cerca del hospital Mayo Clinic y recibir tratamiento.
