William Somerset Maugham

Nació el 25 de enero de 1874 en París.

Cursó estudios de Medicina en la Universidad de Heidelberg (Alemania) y en el hospital de St Thomas's de Londres.

Su primera novela, Liza de Lambert (1897), fue un éxito inmediato que le animó a dejar la medicina.

Su obra más meritoria fue la novela semiautobiográfica Servidumbre humana (1915). Autor también de La luna y seis peniques (1919) basada en la vida del pintor francés Paul Gauguin; El velo pintado (1925), Pasteles y cerveza (1930), Vacaciones de Navidad (1939), Antes de amanecer (1942), El filo de la navaja (1944) que fue llevada al cine en la década de los cuarenta protagonizada por Tyrone Power; Webber y Catalina (1948).

Entre sus relatos destacan El temblor de una hoja (1921), que incluye el relato "Miss Thompson", del que más tarde se realizó una versión teatral titulada Lluvia (1928); Primera persona del singular (1931); El rey (1933), y Cuarteto (1948).

Además escribió comedias satíricas, como El círculo (1921) y Los mejores (1923) y un melodrama titulado Al éste de Suez (1922).

William Somerset Maugham falleció en Niza el 16 de diciembre de 1965.
